The mac mini is quite a different machine for me, but I could not afford to duplicate my current setup with modern gear. I am used to having spare computers with matched mirrored hard drives allready warmed up, and having pairs of everything so that a single failure leaves me with zero issues. It freaks me out a bit thinking of a computer with only two hard drives which is what I will start with- as I assemble out of the box soon. #Buy diskwarrior software#My older system uses mirrored pairs of drives for os and software and data ,and finished work in matched pairs of fast wide scsi 10,000 rpm drives. #Buy diskwarrior install#I just purchased a 5 firewire drive / maxtor one touch and will likely install a hub and at least one more mirrored fast hard drive. I am going to leave the 80 gig drive inside the mini pretty much empty except for the OS and maybe photoshop / office and appleworks. I have used norton utilities and have really liked it, but don't know what the hot software is to buy now. I am trying to decide if I need to buy a disc utility for defragmenting and finding minor issues. I have been on os 8.6 a long time and have a lot to learn. I am getting a new mac mini in the next few days. Humbly, a non techie, self learner, since last year, I can send you that, if needed.Īny help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. If my power is interrupted during the 20 seconds it takes to replace, I lose everything on my hard drive.Īpple sent me someting that some of you might understand about partitions and all, but is Greek to me. Now it tells me I need to delete 100mb of contiguous space to insure their failsafe replacement. Disk Warrior worked fine after that for one session. I deleted that for "contiguous space" as I never use it and see no reason that I ever would. Their current Optimizer Plus works only if one has classic 9 installed. Alsoft tells me I can buy their optimizer and this will take care of the situation. #Buy diskwarrior how to#Neither Alsoft nor Apple can tell me how to accomplish this. Then it started telling me, before replacing the directories, that to insure a failsafe replacement, that I needed to delete 98mb of 'contiguous' space for it to do so. Since Cocktail offers a fully functional demo, download both and see which you like best.I bought Disk Warrior and used it 4 times successfully. (Similarly, OnyX does a few things Cocktail doesn't.) Your $15 (shareware) also gets you a slightly more elegant interface. Maintain's Cocktail is very similar to OnyX in most respects, though it can do a handful of things that OnyX can't, such as optimizing network settings for the type of connection you have. #Buy diskwarrior manual#For instance, you can choose from a long list of Unix commands, from a2p to ypserv, and display the relevant manual ("man") pages. #Buy diskwarrior mac os x#OnyX also provides access to hidden or obscure Mac OS X options. The Automation feature will do all of the above in a single click. The free OnyX from Titanium is a multifunction system utility that offers a host of essential system maintenance tools, including the ability to verify and repair system permissions run a complete system optimization script to increase your Mac's overall speed clear your cache, browser history, cookies, recent searches, CrashReporter logs, log files and so on and view your Mac's hardware info. OnyX's Automation tab lets you perform several maintenance routines at once. These are tools that should be installed on every Mac - and Apple didn't include them, so here's where to get them yourself. ![]() Here's my list of the 22 must-have apps for the Mac in 11 different categories, plus a few bonus apps worth the download. I'm not referring to the full-fledged applications almost everyone needs, such as a word processor or spreadsheet program, but rather the kind of inexpensive program that makes using your Mac easier, safer or more fun. The addition of a few select utilities can fill in some of the missing pieces in your Mac tool kit or extend the capabilities of the built-in tools. ![]() Which isn't to say there's no room for improvement. ![]() On top of that, Apple's included Disk Utility can diagnose and fix the most common threats to the smooth operation of your hard drive. Many system maintenance tasks are handled by Mac OS X's own built-in, Unix-based routines that clean up old files, monitor the health of your hard disk and more. It's got an assortment of software already installed, including a top-notch browser (Safari), a fine instant-messaging program (iChat) and an industry-standard media player (QuickTime). When you buy a new Macintosh, it comes pretty well equipped. ![]()
